Branding Basics for Small Businesses

You don't need a six-figure rebrand to look credible. Here's what actually matters when you're starting from scratch.

Consistency beats cleverness

A simple logo used consistently everywhere — website, social media, email signature, invoices — builds more recognition than an elaborate one used inconsistently. Pick your colours and fonts once, then stick to them everywhere.

Two colours and two fonts is plenty

A primary colour, an accent colour, a heading font and a body font is enough for almost any small business brand. More than that tends to create visual clutter rather than richness.

Your brand should photograph well

Before finalising a colour palette, check how it looks in a real photo of your product, premises or team — not just in a mockup. Colours that look great in isolation sometimes clash badly with real-world photography.
